When and how to use this letter
A gap affidavit is a sworn statement, so write it on stamp paper of the value your jurisdiction requires and have it signed before a notary public or oath commissioner — an unstamped, unnotarized printout carries no weight. The stamp vendor or notary can confirm the correct denomination; it is usually a modest amount.
Keep the reason honest and brief. "Family financial constraints, during which I worked to support my family" is a complete and acceptable explanation — admissions offices and employers process gap affidavits routinely and do not need your life story. Never invent a reason; a sworn false statement is perjury, and inconsistencies surface during background checks.
State the exact gap period with years, name your last completed qualification, and declare that you were not enrolled in any other institution during the gap. That last declaration is what institutions actually check for — undisclosed parallel enrollment is the issue they worry about, not the gap itself.
A useful tip: carry two notarized originals when submitting to universities or employers, since attested photocopies are sometimes rejected and getting a second notarization later means finding the notary again. If the gap is long — five years or more — attach supporting evidence of what you did in the interim (employment letters, course certificates), because a bare affidavit for a decade-long gap invites questions a few documents would have answered.
