When and how to use this letter

Apply as soon as the position appears, because productive brokerages fill strong desks quickly and rarely keep postings open for long. Send the letter by email with your resume attached as a PDF, and include the letter text in the email body so the broker can read it instantly on a phone. If the brokerage has an online application form, paste a condensed version of the letter into the message box rather than leaving it blank.

Lead with numbers. Real estate is one of the few industries where hiring managers expect hard figures in a cover letter: deals closed, total sales volume, average days on market, or listing-to-sale ratios. Pick the two or three metrics where you shine and put them in the second paragraph. If you are new, replace metrics with lead-generation activities: door knocking, cold calling volume, or the size of your personal network.

Mention the brokerage by name and reference something specific about it, such as its market share in a neighborhood, its training program, or its marketing tools. Brokers want agents who chose them deliberately, not agents mass-applying everywhere.

Avoid sounding like a generic salesperson. Emphasize client relationships and local expertise rather than pressure tactics. Do not include your commission expectations in the letter; that conversation happens after they want you. If you do not hear back within a week, follow up with a brief phone call, since brokerages respect agents who can prospect, and the follow-up itself demonstrates the skill.

Frequently asked questions

I am a newly licensed agent with no sales yet. What do I write?
Lead with your license, training, and lead-generation plan. Describe your prospecting activities, your knowledge of the local market, and any customer-facing experience from previous jobs. Brokerages hire new agents who show hunger and a clear plan to find clients.
Should I include my sales numbers in the cover letter?
Yes, if they are strong. Deals closed, sales volume, and average days on market are exactly what brokers look for. If your numbers are modest, include your best two metrics and let your prospecting plan and local knowledge carry the rest.
Is it okay to apply to multiple brokerages at once?
Yes, but customize each letter with the brokerage name and one specific reason you want to join them. Sending identical letters to competing brokerages is a small industry, and word travels when an application feels mass-produced.
