When and how to use this letter
A failed UPI payment with a successful debit is one of the most common digital payment problems, and it is almost always traceable. Your single most important piece of evidence is the transaction reference number, often labelled UTR or RRN, which follows the money through every system it touched. Screenshot the failed transaction screen in your UPI app showing this number before it scrolls out of your history.
Raise the dispute in two places at once: inside your UPI app's help section and with your bank. The app team and the bank team each cover part of the transaction chain, and complaining to only one invites weeks of being bounced between them. Use the same reference number in both complaints so the cases can be linked.
Many failed UPI debits reverse automatically within a few working days, so note the date and give the system that window before escalating. But if the deadline passes, send this letter to your bank's grievance cell with the reference number, amount, date, and screenshots attached.
The tip that shortens the wait: payment network operating guidelines in several countries set a defined turnaround time for failed transaction reversals, and banks that miss it may owe the customer compensation. Quoting the reference number and asking for the reversal timeline in writing turns a vague complaint into a tracked case with a clock on it.
