When and how to use this letter
File this complaint as soon as you are sure the phone is lost, ideally on the same day. Visit the police station nearest to where the phone went missing and carry your ID card plus the phone's purchase bill or box, which usually has the IMEI printed on it. The officer will record your statement and issue a complaint receipt with a reference number.
Do two things in parallel: ask your mobile carrier to block the lost SIM and issue a replacement, and register the IMEI for blocking. In India, the CEIR portal (ceir.gov.in) lets you block a lost phone's IMEI across all networks so it cannot be used even with a new SIM. In Pakistan, report the IMEI to your carrier and the PTA so the device can be blocked and traced.
Keep the stamped complaint copy safe. You will need it for an insurance claim, for your carrier's records, and if the phone is later recovered the police will contact you using the complaint number. Take a photo of the complaint as a backup.
A non-obvious tip: check your Google or Apple account's device history before visiting the station. The last known location shown by Find My Device or Find My iPhone can be written into the complaint and genuinely helps the police narrow the search.
Never sign a blank statement or let anyone rush you through the details. Read the written complaint before signing, and make sure the IMEI, model, and mobile number are recorded correctly. A wrong IMEI on the report makes tracing impossible.
