When and how to use this letter
Check the challan details online first through your traffic police portal or app. Look at the attached photograph carefully: the date, time, location, and vehicle number. Many wrongful challans are obvious at this stage, such as a photo showing a different vehicle or a number plate that is not yours.
File your dispute within the deadline, which is usually 15 to 30 days from issue. Unpaid challans gather late penalties and can block your vehicle's registration renewal, so even a challan you are disputing should be tracked until it is resolved.
Attach every piece of proof you have: dashcam footage, toll receipts showing you were elsewhere, parking slips, or photographs of your number plate. Write the facts plainly and reference the evidence by name so the reviewing officer can match each claim to its proof.
A non-obvious tip: if the challan's vehicle photo is not yours, your number plate may have been cloned. In that case, file a separate police complaint about the cloned plate as well, because disputing one challan will not stop future ones from landing on your record.
If you sold the vehicle before the challan date, attach the sale deed or transfer receipt. Ownership transfer delays are a common cause of wrongful challans, and proof of sale usually gets the challan moved to the buyer. Keep copies of everything you submit and note the complaint reference number for follow-up.
